Ukiyo-e :

The art of the floating world

Since the 19th century, Ukiyo-e (浮世絵), a traditional Japanese art movement, has had an impact on both Japan and the rest of the world. This booklet will outline the development of this Japanese traditional art form and its impact on later Western art. For instance, ukiyo-e has influenced artists like French artist Claude Monet and Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh.

The people who study or are interested in Eastern or Asian art will be the target audience for this booklet. And we hope that people will learn more about this artistic technique, respect it, and use it in a variety of modern designs.

What is Ukiyo-e ?

From the 17th to the 19th centuries, the Japanese art form known as "ukiyo-e" experienced great success. Woodblock prints and paintings depicting female beauties, kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers, historical and folkloric scenes, travel scenes and landscapes, flora and fauna, and erotica were created by its artists. The phrase "pictures of the floating world" is ukiyo-e (浮世絵).
